A NEW sandwich and cake shop priding itself on home baking has opened in Rhyl.

“Neens Butties and Bakes” was opened by Rhyl resident, Janine Roberts, at 112 Grange Road on September 6.

Janine is turning her hand to running her own business after years of experience in catering, and said the first few weeks since opening day have been a whirlwind.

She said: “To be honest, the first week, I was completely gobsmacked at how busy it was. I didn’t anticipate how busy it was going to be.

“Since then, it’s stayed busy, but nice and steady, which is good. I can’t complain!

“I haven’t had an official opening day yet - to be honest, it’s happened quite quickly, but quick in a good way.”

Given its name because “everybody calls me ‘Neen’”, Janine’s store sells everything from pasta and salad pots, to tasty sandwiches, coffee cakes, vanilla slices and much more.

And though the store was closed on Monday (September 19) for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, Janine also offered collection-only afternoon tea.

This included a variety of sandwiches, sausage rolls, quiche, scones with jam and cream, mini cheesecakes, and Yorkshire Tea.

The one constant, though, is that all of her products are fresh and home-made.

Janine added: “It’s mainly the home baking products which are the most popular, but to be honest, it’s doing well across the board.

“I do pasta and salad pots as well, so there’s a variety of different things, but home baking has always been top of the list.

“My mum likes to bake and my grandma was a baker, so I assume it’s just come from there.

“My Lotus Biscoff Rocky Roads, brownies and scones fly out! People like a bit of everything, which is good.

“It (catering) is all I’ve ever done. I was catering in Coleg Llandrillo for in excess of 15 years, and it just felt like the right time for me to do it.

“I’m coming up to 46, and from leaving school, that’s really pretty much all I’ve done. This is all new to me, but I’ve had a lot of help from very supportive friends and family.”

“Neens Butties and Bakes” is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday.
