CPD Y RHYL 1879 went four points clear at the top of the league after a tough 2-0 win against Y Felinheli.

Following on from the dominant display last time out, manager Gareth Thomas came into the game looking to cement his side's position at the top of the table.

Club captain Reece Fairhurst and Kieran Ellis would miss the clash, with Miles Todd and Oliver Buckley stepping in - Adam Hold also returned to the starting line-up after a few weeks out injured.

Captain James Jones who would win the toss, and in doing so elected to play up the Cae Seilo slope in the first half.

As the game got underway it was clear both teams would be in for a tough afternoon on a soft and heavy pitch.

Rhyl controlled the opening exchanges, with the home side struggling to break down an overload in midfield, 1879 attacking with gusto time and time again with early chances from Mark Roberts.

The deadlock would be broken 22 minutes in, Buckley dribbling from right to left across the box before backheeling the ball straight into the path of Alex jones, who calmly placed the ball past the reach of goalkeeper Marc Wyn Jones.

After the goal, the home side grew into the game, Rhyl's Miles Todd on hand to keep the Lilywhites' lead before the break.

The second half began with the Lilywhites attacking downhill, and this allowed for a much more open game.

Chris Bennett almost made the advantage pay instantly, and saw his effort beat the keeper but fly over the bar.

The half saw both teams struggle with the conditions, with both sides trying to play attractive football but defeated by the boggy pitch.

The home side would have the best of the opportunities, with an effort that hit the bar with 10 minutes left.

Late into injury time, with the home side pressing for an equaliser, Rhyl's James Cairns cut inside and squared the ball into the path of Oliver Staveley, who fired in from close range to seal a 2-0 win and three points.

Manger Gareth Thomas was full of praise for his players after the game and singled out Miles Todd and Oliver Buckley for their contributions and the side for adapting to the tactical changes.

Rhyl next face Saltney Town at the Belle Vue this Saturday (kick off: 2pm).
