A CHILDREN’s football team based in Rhyl has enjoyed a “very special” first season following its formation last year.

“Hearts Spartans” is an under-7s team put together by Nick Bickerstaff, who also owns and runs Prestatyn Butchers.

In their first season in existence, the team reached a cup final, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0, and held their own in the Rhyl and District Junior League.

Nick and his wife Kathryn, a psychiatric nurse, helped fund the club, which is affiliated with Rhyl Hearts Junior Football Club, and are looking to expand it further next season.

He said: “I haven’t used my shop logo or anything like that, because it’s nothing to do with promoting my business; it’s just for the children. My wife and I have bought everything for them.

“It’s been going for nearly a year now, and they’ve done really well considering they’re only six and seven.

“In the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be trying to recruit again to keep the club going, through ‘turn up and play’ feeder sessions on June 5 at Coronation Gardens in Rhyl.

“It will be open to boys and girls, and is just about giving them a basic insight into playing football.

“Rhyl Hearts are looking at recruiting new coaches at different age levels, as well; some of them have been there for 30-odd years now.”

The team has shown real signs of progression in their first season, Nick said, with three more tournaments on the horizon.

They are keen to take on new teams from age groups ranging from under-6s up to under-15s.

No experience will also be required for potential new coaches, either, and you can contact Nick by emailing: bickers9@icloud.com.

He added: “When they came out on to the pitch in the final to the Champions League theme music, it was a little bit special. They’ve done well, only losing a handful of games, and I’m very proud of them.

“My assistant, Paul, and I are truly proud of what they have achieved.”
