A MAN from Prestatyn who was previously told that prison is “virtually inevitable” for him has admitted further charges of strangling and assaulting a woman.

Anthony Cliffe, 45, of Grosvenor Road, pleaded guilty to one count each of assault by beating and intentional strangulation at Caernarfon Crown Court today (November 7).

He had previously admitted, on June 20 at the same court, a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Cliffe will be sentenced on November 24, and is remanded in custody until then.

Today, the court heard that, on April 29 he assaulted Kathleen Edge, before intentionally strangling her on May 18.

On June 20, Cliffe admitted breaching a Domestic Violence Protection Order on May 23 by contacting Ms Edge.

Cliffe today also denied strangling Ms Edge on May 10, and assaulting her on May 14, but these charges were ordered to lie on file.

During Cliffe’s June hearing, Judge Timothy Petts, who also presided over today’s matters, told the defendant: “The fact you pleaded guilty will make a difference to your sentence.

“But an immediate prison sentence is virtually inevitable.

“We can’t have people going around, contacting complainants in serious cases, and suggesting that they might want to withdraw their statement.”
