A MAN from Rhyl faces jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Anthony Cliffe, 44, of Elwy Street, was accused of breaching a Domestic Violence Protection Order on May 23 by contacting a complainant, Kathleen Edge.

He admitted the charge at Caernarfon Crown Court today (June 20).

Cliffe’s sentencing was adjourned until Tuesday, July 18 after Simon Killeen, defending him, successfully applied for a pre-sentence report to first be written.

Though Mr Killeen accepted that “custody is almost inevitable” for his client, he said that there is “some merit in seeking a report” for Cliffe.

The defendant, who was supported in court by his partner, was said to “want to move on”.

Judge Timothy Petts, presiding over the case, agreed to the adjournment, and remanded Cliffe in custody until July 18.

“The fact you pleaded guilty will make a difference to your sentence, but an immediate prison sentence is virtually inevitable,” Judge Petts told Cliffe.

“We can’t have people going around, contacting complainants in serious cases, and suggesting that they might want to withdraw their statement.”
