PRESTATYN railway station’s planters, raised beds and little gardens are all planted up and ready to face the winter weather after weeks of hard work.

The railway embankment has also had a cut to prepare to show off the thousands of daffodils, crocus, tulips and bluebells next spring.

This work has been carried out by community group Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station, with the help of Denbighshire County Council’s Streetscene team.

Together, they clear the weeds on the disused platform, and do the cut-backs on the steep incline which forms the railway embankment.

They also collect the gardening clear-outs which amass as the planters are prepared for new seasonal bedding plants, as well as supplying litter bags for the Sunday morning litter picks.

This year, the wooden planter, which had been damaged, has also been re-designed.

Wales in Bloom, for the sixth consecutive year, awarded Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station “level five – outstanding” in its 2023 “It’s Your Neighbourhood” competition.

Ian Lifford, group chair, said: “There are so many voluntary groups throughout the town who owe a debt of gratitude to Drew Tait and his (Streetscene) team.

“Much can be achieved by volunteers, who as well as offering their services free of charge can draw down funding from other sources, other than the public purse, but we work in the knowledge that help is at hand in the shape of Drew and his team.

“As austerity bites and council’s face cuts to their budget the partnership established by the voluntary sector and Denbighshire County Council’s Streetscene prove that much can be achieved by this approach.

Drew Tait, Streetscene co-ordinator, added: “We have many objectives and aims in common with the voluntary groups.

“It’s where our interests cross over that we are able to assist the most and tailor our schedules and current workload to coincide with others.

“This has very little or no impact on our increasingly squeezed budget.

“Our purpose is to enhance our environment for the people - living, working and visiting Denbighshire, to promote the health and wellbeing of others and promoting a clean, sustainable, biodiverse environment, to futureproof this for generations to come.”
