A VENETIAN masquerade ball in Prestatyn raised more than £2,000 for an ongoing environmental project.

The ball, held at the Beaches Hotel on Saturday, April 23, was organised by Prestatyn Business Forum to support its “Whale Tails” scheme.

“Whale Tails” is a project several years in the making, which would see two 2.4m-high whale tail sculptures, acting as recycling bins and made of weathering steel, placed along Prestatyn's promenade.

A live band also provided entertainment throughout the night, as all profits from the event went to support “Whale Tails”.

Sally Smart, forum secretary, said: “It was a great success! The room looked amazing, everyone wore a mask and got into the swing of things.

“We started with a drinks reception in the reception area and everyone could have their photo taken on arrival.

“We then sat down to a lovely three-course meal, and this was followed by Hayley Sinnott (The Hideaway)’s famous ‘Congo Bongo Boogie Bingo’.

“It's an experience that everyone should have at least once; it’s great fun and gets the whole room on their feet, joining in!

“The night was filled with fun and laughter with some amazing prizes from local businesses, and we finished with an incredible live band; ‘The Whole Of The Moon’.

“I still have to count up all the final donations from the evening, but it looks like we made £2,500.

“Due to the fact that the cost of steel has increased, as well as COVID lockdowns, I have decided to push ahead with fewer tails, to stay within the initial quote rather than increase the fundraising, which will jeopardise a £12,500 grant from Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm due to the delayed start.”

Prizes at the ball were donated from the following:

• Baa Stools (Denbigh)

• Gwydyr Hotel (Betws Y Coed)

• Alpine Cafe (Betws Y Coed)

• Hangin Pizzeria (Betws Y Coed)

• Alpine Apartments (Betws Y Coed)

• The Deli On The Hill (Prestatyn)

• Ian Murray Chainsaw Carving/Sculptor (Rhyl)

• Hidden Vines UK

The group’s previous fundraising endeavours have included risqué calendars for the last two years, with many business owners on Prestatyn High Street taking part.
