CPD Y Rhyl 1879’s unbeaten run stretched to 11 games following a hard-fought 2-1 win at CPD Y Felinheli on Saturday (March 18).

The league leaders had to come from behind, though, after Gruff John put Felinheli ahead following pressure down the right which ended up in a corner.

John was the first to get a touch from an in-swinging cross to put Rhyl behind for the first time in 2023.

But Rhyl’s response was almost immediate, as Alex Jones soon brought the scores level.

With his back to goal on the edge of the box, he turned and used his determination to drive at goal, when he spotted a gap between Guto Hughes and the net.

Faking a shot, he put the keeper down, and duly slotted the ball home.

Just after the half-hour mark, Rhyl would go into the lead, with Jones again in the thick of it.

He played a ball to Jack Higgins, just inside the box under pressure; Higgins could only hold the defender back, the two fell to the ground, but Higgins was able to give Jones the ball back.

He took a step forward and sent his shot goalwards, only for it to ricochet off the bar, where Sion Williams was first to react and fired the ball past Hughes to score his second of the season.

The game was stopped for several minutes towards the end of the first half following an injury to Dan Sim.

As he was challenging for the ball in front of the home dugout, he was pushed and was sent flying, landing on the concrete step, resulting in a severe gash to his right leg.

This would lead to him being replaced by James Stead at half-time.

In the second half, the heavy rain turned the Cae Seilo pitch into a mud bath, and both teams struggled to get any sort of rhythm going.

Indeed, the game ended with 22 mud-covered players indistinguishable from each other, and Rhyl were relieved to hear referee Rhodri Ap Dafydd’s final whistle.

The win puts Rhyl nine points clear of Bangor in second place at the top of the Ardal North West League, with five games remaining.

Next up for the Lilywhites will be a trip to Llangefni Town.
