TABLE-topping CPD Y Rhyl 1879 maintained their good form in a 4-2 home win against Llay Welfare on Saturday (March 11), in one of the Ardal Northern League games which did not fall victim to the snowy weather.

The two sides had only met at Llay the previous week, where the Lilywhites were also victorious on that occasion thanks to an 80th-minute goal from Kieran Ellis.

It took until the second half for the deadlock to be broken; Tom Kemp, out on the left, took down a long pass in his stride, jockeyed past a defender, and cut the ball into box, where Alex Jones was on hand to score his 10th of the campaign.

Just moments after his introduction, former Llay striker Jonny Taylor punished his former club, after a wonderful bit of play by Macauley Taylor down the right had seen him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

But he selflessly pulled the ball back to his namesake, who netted from close range with his first touch of the game before performing a Jurgen Klinsmann-esque dive in front of the Rhyl faithful.

Undeterred by going two goals down, the visitors went straight up the other end and were awarded a direct free kick just outside the left corner of the box.

Narrow win sees Rhyl overcome another tough away challenge

Striker Scott Swords would take it and dispatched a sublime free kick up and over the Rhyl wall and into the back of the net to halve the hosts’ lead.

The two Taylors would combine again for Rhyl to re-establish their two-goal advantage, though; this time, Macauley would find himself on the left in space, before squaring to Jonny, who fired home.

Macauley Taylor got his 10th of the season and Rhyl’s fourth of the game with four minutes to go; Alex Jones spotted him splitting the Llay defence with his speed and slotted the ball to his feet.

With only the goalkeeper to beat, Taylor dispatched his effort and celebrated in front of the Rhyl fans.

Llay didn’t give up, though, and Jonathan Collo would get another goal back deep into injury time.

The win against Llay extends Rhyl’s unbeaten run to 10 games (with nine victories).

Following the match, Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas gave credit to Llay for the two games, and praised his teams for their goals, and to the fans for braving the snow to attend the game.

The Lilywhites are now eight points clear at the top of the league, and now embark on a four-game run of away fixtures.

Next up will be the trip to Gwynedd side CPD Felinheli next Saturday (March 18).
