CPD Y Rhyl 1879 fell to a 2-1 loss at fellow promotion challengers Denbigh Town in the Ardal North West Division on Friday (November 25).

It all started very positively for the visitors when Jack Higgins tapped to give Rhyl a third-minute lead after excellent work by Alex Jones.

The home team responded well, and it was no surprise when Dewi Llion Jones’ men deservedly levelled on 27 minutes.

Ben Lockley played a ball along the edge of the box and Paul Fleming stepped back, allowing Nathan Brown to curl an unstoppable shot into the far-right corner.

The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, before taking the lead on 54 minutes, after Harry Lockley’s cross was headed in by striker Jake Walker.

Midway through the half, the Lilywhites stepped up their efforts and pinned Denbigh back in to defending their own half.

They almost equalised after a wicked deflection from a speculative Elliott Evans shot sent home keeper Aaron Jones back-pedalling to tip over the crossbar.

Jason Foulkes had a chance to put the game out of sight, but lashed his effort into the side-netting, before Rhyl goalkeeper Luke Wilmot again came to the rescue to finger-tip away another Brown effort, who should’ve had more.

After the game, Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas was honest in his appraisal of the Lilywhites’ performance.

He said: “We were lucky to get away with 2-1. We weren’t good enough.

“Let’s not make any excuses; they deserved the three points.”

Next up for the Lilywhites is a home fixture against Hawarden Rangers; a reverse of the away fixture three weeks ago, which Rhyl won.

Kick-off is at 2pm on Saturday, December 3 at Belle Vue.
