WORK has started to demolish the roof of a building in Towyn after it was deemed unsafe.

The property, 10 Pontydd Terrace on Towyn Road, has been cordoned off while the demolition takes place.

It sits adjacent to a set of traffic lights located at a crossroads within the centre of Towyn, and extends further south towards Fourways Caravan Park.

A planning application for the work was submitted to Conwy County Borough Council on August 7, and approved on September 19.

During an inspection of the property, parts of the building’s ceilings were found to be missing, while various types of asbestos were also identified.

The property was described as being in a “very poor condition”, with animal waste found throughout, and the rear and roof of the building exposed to the outside.

Indeed, parts of the building were deemed to present a danger to the public and to require “urgent action”.

A resident who lives nearby told the Journal that the property has been “falling apart” for some time.

“Pigeons have been nesting in the building for years and years,” the resident added.

“Rumour has it that slates fell off and hit someone.”

Towyn and Kinmel Bay Town Council raised no objections to the plans when consulted.

Conwy County Borough Council’s countryside and highways departments highlighted concerns about the working hours.

As such, demolition works are taking place between 8am and 6pm so as to limit the amount of disturbance to nearby residents.

The property has had previous planning applications submitted for it to be converted into a restaurant.
