A RUGBY player has been remembered fondly for his ability to “to light up a room with his warmth, friendliness, quick wit and humour” following his sudden and unexpected death, aged 39.

Mark Jones-Davies, known by members of Clwb Rygbi Abergele as Sparky, was one of the club's longest-serving players,

He died on the morning of Monday, February 19.

He is survived by his wife, Emily, son Rhys and daughters Maggie and Kitty.

A spokesman for the rugby club said: “Sparky had the ability to light up a room with his warmth, friendliness, quick wit and humour and was always happy to help anyone at the club.

"His passing will leave a void in the lives of his family, friends and all members of the club who are determined to keep his values of sportsmanship, commitment and friendship alive in his memory.”

Mark began his career with the club in 1988 with the junior section aged nine, progressing through the youth section and ultimately moving up to the first XV.

During his 30-year career with the club, he rose through the ranks, captaining the first team between 2005 and 2007, and also the second XV, before moving on to coach and supporting the the ladies' section in their opening seasons, as well as helping out with the juniors over the years.

The club spokesman added: “He was often seen helping behind the bar and serving up food as well as a host of other tasks – always willingly, always with a smile on his face."

Friends, family and team mates are invited to attend his funeral, which will be held at the St Asaph Crematorium tomorow, St David’s Day, at 1pm.

The family requests that anyone wishing to pay respects where whatever they like and is encouraging his Abergele team-mates and fellow rugby fans to wear their team shirt or colours or any rugby-orientated clothing.

Donations in lieu of flowers are invited for the Cruse bereavement counselling for children and the British Heart Foundation charities.
