STRUGGLING Abergele turned in their finest performance of the season in their 15-0 shutout win over Newtown.

A strong start to proceedings saw the home side gain an early advantage when skipper Chris Meyers latched on to a Nathan Lea pass to touch down. Rich Meddlicott added the conversion.

The score should have been extended just before the break but Meddlicott's penalty narrowly missed the target, but the gifted kicker redeemed himself after the interval by despatching a free-kick through the upright.

With the hosts now in complete control, another sweeping move in difficult conditions brought further joy when Rich Hillier powered his way over the line for an unconverted try.

The loss of Alex Murray to the sin bin shortly after halted Gele’s momentum, and they were dealt another blow when the influential Meyers was forced off through injury.

Despite this, they were able to withstand the pressure put on them by the away side during the closing stages, with the returning Llion Mortimer producing an excellent defensive display after two years out for the Pentre Mawr Park side.

Gele are six points adrift of safety in WRU National League Division Two North following just their second triumph in 11 games.
