LIFE begins at 40 for some, but for Prestatyn Running Club’s Gordon Jones, 65 is proving to be the golden age.

Since his birthday in July, Gordon, from Rhos-on-Sea, has turned in a series of outstanding performances, the latest coming in Sunday (October 22)’s Abergele 10k.

The cancellation of Saturday’s cross-country fixture in Colwyn Bay meant that he could channel all his efforts into the 10k and he not only finished seventh overall, winning his age-group, but set a new M65 course record of 39.31.

It has also been confirmed that his time of 1-25.14 in last month’s Caernarfon Half Marathon was a new North Wales record, taking more than four minutes off the previous best set by Cliff Wilkinson (North Wales RR) in 2000.

He has also been named in the Welsh squad for the British and Irish Masters’ cross-country international in Glasgow on November 11.

The only other Prestatyn runner in the Abergele race was Andrew Carter, who clocked 53.22, having earlier done the 5k event in 24.21.

He “doubled up” as part of his training for the upcoming Conwy Half-Marathon, his first attempt at the distance.

Also in the 5k, Tom Carter finished third overall and won the M40 class in a brilliant 16.44.

Another supervet is great form at the moment is club treasurer Sue Hughes - she joined a huge field for the Edinburgh Women’s 10k and was fourth L60 in 53.20.

Conditions were also perfect for the Chester 10k and 10-mile event.

Mother-and-son Sian Beck and Iestyn Evans opted for the shorter distance and Iestyn again broke the 40-minute barrier, finishing 43rd in 39.01.

Sian also had an excellent run, coming third in the L45 category in 47.15.

At the same venue, Andrew Scott competed in the 10-miler and was happy with his time of 1-31.34.

After the previous week’s 1-2 in the Nova parkrun, the club recorded a 1-2-3 on Saturday, with Jamie Betts claiming his second consecutive win.
