PRESTATYN Sports secured derby day bragging rights with a 3-0 friendly win over Meliden.

The NWCFA Tier 4 (East) Premier Division rivals locked horns at the Meadows playing fields for the first time with no confirmed date yet announced for a return to competitive action, with John Hargreaves and Sion Williams’ side emerging victorious following a feisty encounter.

A frantic first half was littered with robust challenges that were in keeping with the fierce rivalry between the two sides, but Sports managed to go into the break a goal to the good thanks to a sensational 35-yard effort from experienced striker Lee Beattie, who has previously represented Prestatyn Town and joined the club earlier this summer.

After the break saw the home side begin to control possession more prominently than the first period, which brought further success in front of goal when skipper Shane Middleman latched on to a tremendous through ball from Mark Pierce to fire into the net and double their cushion.

The Miners responded incredibly well to the setback and spurned a host of chances to get themselves back into the game soon after.

Sports stopper Ryan Jones pulled off a sensational stop midway through the half to divert a goalbound effort narrowly over the bar, which proved crucial in the eventual result.

The hosts managed to put the exclamation point on proceedings on 70 minutes to secure the triumph, with Beattie once again on hand to head home a sublime cross from Ryan Fortune to complete the scoring.

This was the first time that Sports’ senior side had seen action since March, marking their opening contest at their new home with a comfortable victory.
