ABERGELE got their first victory of the North Wales Cricket League Group C campaign thanks to a 23-run home triumph over Marchwiel and Wrexham.

A fine all-round performance from Gele saw them pick up an eye-catching win at Pentre Mawr Park, but things did not begin well for the hosts after losing opening duo Ben Garnett and Karl Higgins for the combined total of three runs.

David Williams did not fare much better, making just six before he was given out, and Lewis Tolond saw his stumps fly at the hands of Ryan Williams on 14.

Middle-order batsman Ed Rooney steadied the ship with a knock of 28, with some valuable runs coming from the lower order thanks to Sam Painter (21) and David Moulson (27) which proved pivotal in the overall outcome of the contest.

Gele finished their allotted 40 overs at the crease on 140-9, with no fewer than four visiting bowlers taking two wickets apiece.

Kyle Walker got the home side off to a good start in the field with the early wicket of opener Sam Shoemark (9), and Wasim Ali clean bowled Michael Forgrave for just 14.

The away side had three players hit double figures soon after in the form of Nick Husbands (24), George Forgrave (22) and skipper Josh Williams (20), but they were all removed at a crucial period.

This went a long way to swinging momentum in Gele’s favour, and their bowling attack decimated the lower order to leave the visitors 124 all out in reply.

Ben Garnett was the pick of the home bowlers with 3-23, with Higgins, Ali, and Moulson all claiming a pair apiece at the combined expense of 59 runs.

Abergele will look to build on this positive momentum next Saturday when they welcome Connah’s Quay.
