TWO school friends, who were part of one of Denbigh Town FC’s most successful sides in the seventies, have told of how they ended up as presidents on opposite sides of the sporting world.
Clwyd Williams, 67, and Tegid Phillips, 65, were team-mates in the all-conquering Town side of 1972-3, who won the league, the league cup and the North Wales Challenge Cup.
However, the pair had first met when they attended Ysgol Frongoch school in Denbigh. It was there that their taste for sporting success first began.
They won the Urdd Cup whilst playing alongside one another for the school football team in 1963-64 and also represented the Frongoch rugby team.

Clwyd said: "We first met when were about eight years old and became good friends. At the time we played for Denbigh Town, we were two of the local lads in a team which was mostly represented by people from outside the town and from as far afield as Chester."
Tegid eventually went off to Cardiff College, where he played football for the first two years - even playing in the Welsh Amateur Cup.
But it was also whilst in Cardiff that he began to develop a love for his, by now, biggest passion in life - rugby.
Tegid said: "I represented the college's rugby team in my third year and the rest, as they say, is history.
"As a result, I've been with Denbigh rugby club since it first started in 1977 - although I had also played for Ruthin prior to that, who at the time were one of the biggest teams in the area.
"I was fortunate enough to have played for North Wales in football and rugby and I actually carried on playing rugby until I was 43 years old!"
Tegid has been the president of Denbigh Town Rugby Club for the last three years and Clwyd has held the same role at the town's football club for a number of years.
In his playing days, Clwyd was a midfielder who later went on to play for Caernarfon Town, winning the Welsh League title and Welsh Intermediate Cup, before also playing for Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.
He then went on to manage Denbigh Town’s first team, the reserves and the third team before becoming part of the committee. He has also been club secretary twice, as well as chairman and vice-chairman.
During the 2016/2017 season Bob Paton, Chairman and vice president of the Huws Gray Alliance league and President of the North Wales Coast FA, presented Clwyd with an award in recognition of his services to football in North Wales.
Between both Tegid and Clwyd, they have enjoyed many a success and have done their bit for sport in the Denbigh community.
