PRESTATYN Town playmaker Ben Maher is keen for the season to conclude following the coronavirus pandemic.

The influential Seasiders’ star has been arguably the best player operating in JD Cymru North so far this season and has played a leading role in Neil Gibson’s men all-but securing the title following the domestic suspension of fixtures to the Covid-19.

Maher, who enjoyed a brief spell at Caernarfon Town in between two stints at the Motion Finance Stadium, highlighted the financial implications of stopping the season and called on the Football Association of Wales to provide struggling clubs across the country with compensation in the event of such a decision in the future.

In addition to Town chasing a place in the JD Cymru Premier at the second time of asking, the club is also the only second tier team remaining in the JD Welsh Cup and were set to take on all-conquering champions The New Saints for a place in the final.

Maher, said: “On a personal level I don’t want it to be cancelled, and this also counts for club level.

“On a financial level for all teams in JD Cymru Leagues will not want the season to come to an end.

“If they do cancel the season are the FAW not open to clubs wanting financial compensation? Especially the four teams left in the JD Welsh Cup.

“How are they going to come to a conclusion if they don’t play those games? They can’t just pick out of a hat to decide the winner.”

The player also outlined the problem with possibly playing games behind closed doors, with many teams across the region relying heavily on matchday income to remain sustainable.

“I think the FAW will follow what’s happening in England, so we could still be playing this season in August or even September,” added Maher.

“Playing behind closed doors wouldn’t be good for clubs if they do as most clubs rely on gate money to afford staff and player wages.

“Playing through the summer wouldn’t be a problem for me personally, it’s just like starting up pre-season again.”
