PRESTATYN Town all-but clinched the JD Cymru North title thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Flint Town United.

The Seasiders’ are now within touching distance of the championship and promotion back to the JD Cymru Premier, pending a successful FAW Licence application, after a vital three points against their nearest challengers moved them 16 clear at the summit.

Neil Gibson’s side also struck a telling blow on their Silkmen as they prepare to take on United again in a highly anticipated JD Welsh Cup quarter-final clash on Friday evening in front of the S4C Sgorio cameras.

A tense opening to proceedings saw the home side carve out the first opening on four minutes when Ben Maher’s free-kick was saved by Jon Danby, and the United stopper had to b at his best to deny Danny Davies after another good period of play with 14 on the clock.

Alex Jones and Jack Kenny were both thwarted in quick succession midway through the half following a corner, and Town skipper Mike Parker brought the best out of Danby once again on 32 minutes when he saved brilliantly.

The away side were seeing more of the ball and thought they had broken the deadlock on 34 minutes when captain Richie Foulkes found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside to keep the scores level.

After the break saw both sides take their time to build some momentum as conditions worsened, but the defining moment of the contest went the way of the hosts with an hour gone.

Once again it was Davies who was the difference, with the talented wide player unleashing a powerful strike that gave Danby no chance to give the home side a slender advantage.

This provoked a strong response from Niall McGuinness’ side, who spurned a golden opportunity on 66 minutes as Jon Rushton fingertips denied them a leveller.

Town were looking threatening on the break a counter-attack on 78 minutes sent Kenny through on goal, but the forward blazed over and the danger was averted.

United piled on the pressure in the closing stages and came within inches of claiming a share of the spoils on 85 minutes when full-back Dan Roberts hacked a goal-bound attempt off the line with Rushton beaten to secure the points.
