RUTHIN LADIES 2

NEWTOWN 4

IT is turning out to be a tough beginning to the second half of the North Wales Hockey League season for Ruthin Ladies as they are playing the top-three teams in the league in succession.

However, Ruthin’s performance on Saturday gives an indication of the development as a club and team.

The last result against Newtown was a 4-1 loss, but this time around the Ruthin ladies scored twice and they carried a threat to the Newtown goal throughout.

Ruthin have a policy of developing homegrown talent and a recent spate of injuries to regular starting players meant fielding a team of comparatively inexperienced youngsters who held their own against the third strongest team in North Wales, showing great team spirit and confidence in themselves.

Newtown were very effective in the final third, forcing several penalty corners and converting them with well practised routines, but Ruthin adapted well and they defending higher up the pitch, particularly in the second half.

Player of the match Llinos Jones bagged Ruthin’s two goals after strong counter-attacks.

All-in-all, it was a strong showing and a game enjoyed by everyone involved.
