RHYL and District remain top of Specsavers National League Division Two North thanks to a hard-fought 15-10 home win over Welshpool.

The promotion hopefuls are now seven points clear of Mold having played a game more than their championship rivals, but they had to dig extremely deep thanks to an outstanding display from the physical mid Wales outfit.

The visitors looked to avenge a heavy loss to the Dragons’ earlier on in the season from the outset and notched the first try of the contest which was converted during the opening exchanges.

This provoked a strong reaction from the home side, who got back on level terms soon after when a slick passing move sent Tom Williams free to cross the white wash. Richie Williams added the extras.

Williams also despatched a well-struck penalty during the first period that was matched by the visitors earlier in the half, but a sloppy start from both sides after the break saw plenty of handling errors and little in the way of try-line activity.

The crucial moment of the game arrived on 70 minutes when pacey winger Will Morris produced a moment of magic thanks to his trademark speed to give the home side the lead for the first time in the contest, and although the conversion attempt was missed they managed to hold on in the face of consistent pressure in the closing stages to secure their ninth success in ten league games.

Jimmy Waring’s men will look to take one step closer to the crown this Saturday during a trip to an inconsistent Shotton Steel outfit.

The Dragons’ youth side produced their finest attacking display of the season to come away with a 52-0 rout over Llangefni to open their Championship League quest in the best possible way, with Rhyl’s second unit beaten 24-10 at Llangollen despite a spirited effort.
