PRESTATYN Town extended their advantage at the JD Cymru North summit with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Corwen.

The Seasiders’ emerged with three points against the newly promoted strugglers with minimal fuss to bolster their claims of promotion, and they received further good news as title rivals Flint Town United were downed at home by Colwyn Bay.

This leaves Neil Gibson’s men five points clear heading into the busy festive fixture list, which begins on Saturday with a trip to Gresford Athletic.

Danny Davies and Ben Maher both went close for the home side during the opening exchanges, but they were handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock on 17 minutes when Jordan Davies was felled in the box, and midfielder Rob Hughes despatched the spot kick to give his side the advantage.

Hughes came within inches of adding a second towards the end of the first period when his powerful drive flashed past the post, but the former Connah’s Quay Nomads player would not be denied shortly after the interval thanks to a brilliant solo run and finish with 47 on the clock.

The hosts were now in complete control of the contest and secured another vital three points on the hour mark, and once again it was Hughes who proved to be the difference-maker when he turned in chance after linking up superbly with Davies.

Town rounded off the scoring on 67 minutes thanks to Hughes’ fourth of the afternoon, which came thanks to a thunderous free kick that gave the visiting custodian no chance.

Credit to the away side, who kept plugging away despite the overall outcome becoming a foregone conclusion in the closing stages, and they were rewarded with a consolation on 68 minutes when Dale Davies made the most of some rare space to ensure his side had something to show for their effort.

Following Saturday’s game against a dangerous but inconsistent Gresford side, the promotion favourites welcome derby rivals Rhyl on December 28 before travelling to Colwyn Bay on New Year’s Day.
