THIS Sunday’s Cancer Research UK Race for Life will be the culmination of an inspiring 12-month battle from a Rhyl Football Club volunteer.

Theresa Curran is set to take her place alongside thousands of others at the prominent annual event, which started and finish at the town’s Events Arena to raise funds for the national cancer charity.

The centre co-ordinator at Canolfan Dewi Sant in Pensarn felt a lump whilst showering on the June last year, which resulted in her being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer tumour within the breast.

This was followed by an intensive treatment plan that was administered within days of the initial diagnosis, which saw Mrs Curran undergo sic treatments of Chemotherapy at the North Wales Cancer Centre in Bodelwyddan between August and November which left her “shattered” as the multitude of drugs kicked in and fought the disease.

Following a break to recuperate over the Christmas and New Year period, Mrs Curran underwent lumpectomy surgery at the start of January and daily Radiotherapy treatment for a one-month period.

Her latest round of treatment ended at the beginning of April, enabling Mrs Curran to “return to a degree of normality” following a traumatic ten-month process.

She said: “As the event takes place exactly 12 months to the day from that initial self-diagnosis, it’s important to raise awareness of the importance of being aware of your own body and if any changes are found, to immediately consult your GP.

“The care and support from the Cancer Centre was first class and I am so glad that I immediately sought help upon finding the lump in my breast.

“If I had ignored it then who knows what situation I would be in today – it doesn’t bear thinking about to be honest.

“The support from family, friends and the community, including my volunteer friends at Rhyl FC, has been amazing and it has meant people have been with me every step of the way. A great big thank you to everyone.”

Mrs Curran is a long-serving volunteer with the Lilywhites, assisting in manning the turn-styles on matchday and with the running of the profitable 200 club.
