RHYL and District’s youth side ended their impressive season with a trophy after a thrilling final.

The young Dragons took on Llangefni in the North Wales Youth Bowl final on Sunday, May 5, and they produced a sensational display to emerge victorious by a score of 26-10.

An early score and conversion put Rhyl ahead during the opening exchanges, but Cefni fired back with a penalty just before the break to make it a four-point game after a hotly contested first period.

After the interval saw the Dragons pull further clear thanks to a tremendous try from Sol Williams early in the second half, but they were down to 14-men following a yellow card immediately following the restart which gave Cefni a massive boost.

They made the most of their man advantage with a converted score to bring them right back into the game, but the Dragons fought back in fine style and managed to secure a notable success with tries from Oliver Staveley, Huw Roberts and Callum Gardner, who also kicked three conversions.

This represents a significant achievement for the youth squad, who have developed considerably throughout the season, going from whipping boys to genuine contenders in a matter of months.

A Rhyl and District spokesman, said: “Praise must be given to the coaches who kept this team going through the season after some early bad results against older teams.

“They have improved so much to record some outstanding results to end their season.”
