LLANRWST United booked their place in the Mawddach Challenge Cup final with a superb 2-1 home win over Llanrug United.

The Rwsters’ will now contest for silverware at the end of the season after a difficult few weeks behind the scenes due to flood damage at their Gwydir Park base, and they will look to cause a major upset in the showcase when they look to topple all-conquering Llangefni Town for the trophy.

A scoreless first period saw both sides spurn opportunities to gain an advantage, but United came out with a renewed sense of purpose after the interval and they were rewarded with the opener on 47 minutes when Chris Nicholson made the most of the space afforded to him to steer into the net.

The home side continued to probe in search of enhancing their chances of a notable semi-final triumph, and they doubled their tally on the hour mark when another outstanding spell of pressure saw Tom Jones finish well to put them two-up.

Things toom a nervy turn for the hosts late on when Jonathan Sadler finally netted for the away side a minute from time to reduce the arrears and set up a frantic finish.

Despite this, the Rwsters remained resolute and thwarted any further danger to clinch a cup final berth, and they will take on their semi-final opponents once again next Saturday in a Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One fixture.
