LLANEWLY Athletic rounded off a sensational season by claiming the REM Jones Cup with a 3-2 win over Rhos United.

The Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One champions sealed a memorable double in their final game of the campaign, but they were made to work hard by a spirited United side at the home of Huws Gray Alliance side Denbigh Town.

Athletic began the game on the front foot and opened the scoring in the first period when Shane Evans found the net after some sustained pressure.

This was met by a swift response from Rhos, who levelled proceedings just minutes after going behind when the in-form Tom Brady took advantage of the space afforded to him to ensure both sides had all to play for at the interval.

After the break saw the champions grab the initiative once again, and they were rewarded for their impressive start to the half when Evans despatched another opportunity for his second of the evening.

Their joy proved to be short-lived as United demonstrated their incredible to peg them back yet again soon after, and a clinical Brady finish for his brace ensured a nail-biting end to proceedings.

There was still time for further drama which arrived in the closing stages, and Athletic regained the advantage for a third and final time when Frankie Hennigan hit the target for what turned out to be the last goal of a pulsating cup tie.

United threw everything at the Llanelwy rearguard in the closing stages, but they were unable to find a third equaliser in the dying moments to suffer final heartache.

Athletic will now begin preparations ahead of their tilt at the Premier Division next term, with squad due back for the start of pre-season next month.

Secretary Paul Fazackerley, said: “Once again we couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of the lads over the season and are already working on plans for next year behind the scenes.

“Thanks for all our fans for their support throughout the year and also a major thank you to our sponsors. Without you none of this would of been achievable.”
