Porthmadog remain in top two contention after dramatic win at Holywell Town

The second-tier high-flyers were made to work hard for their success against Johnny Haseldin’s men, who ae fighting for their lives at the other end of the standings.

They are now three points behind Flint Town United having played a game more, and Craig Papirnyk’s men are next in action this Saturday in their penultimate home fixture against Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochant (2.30pm).

A cagey opening to the game brought with it only two half chances for the hosts, but the Wellmen did break the deadlock on 29 minutes when powerful forward Damian Ketley was afforded considerable space in the box to steer an effort past the onrushing Paul Pritchard.

Port midfielder Ceri James was fortunate to get away with just a yellow card on 38 minutes thanks to a robust challenge, with Julian Williams dragging an effort narrowly wide for the visitors in first half stoppage time.

After the break saw Shaun Cavanagh forced Wellmen stopper Tyler French into a comfortable save during the opening exchanges, but their persistence finally paid off with 65 on the clock as Sion Edwards produced a fine effort that went in off the crossbar.

Danny Dobbins came within a whisker of getting the home side back in front when he failed to connect with a cross following good work from Sam Jones and Jason Renshaw, with the latter firing a shot wide during another period of dominance from the hosts.

The impressive Dobbins beat Pritchard with a looping header that sailed narrowly over the bar soon after, and Port made Town pay for their inefficiency in front of goal in injury time when Sion Parry diverted a cross past French to seal the points in dramatic fashion.
