PENMAENMAWR Phoenix’s recent slump continued as they suffered a 2-1 reverse at Aberffraw.

The Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two side now occupy ninth position in the standings after pushing the title contenders close, but they were undone by a lack of concentration early on which allowed Gareth Hughes to open the scoring for the home side on 15 minutes.

This provoked a strong response from the visitors, who restored parity to the scoreline after 32 minutes when talented striker Mike Lundstram produced a fine finish to level matters.

The telling moment in the game arrived on 52 minutes, and once again it was Hughes who was on hand to take advantage of an opportunity to put the hosts in front for a second time, and it was a blow that Phoenix could not recover from despite their best efforts.

Mochdre Sports’ struggles continued with a 2-0 home reverse at the hands of Gaerwen.

The home side got off to the worst possible start and fell behind with just four minutes on the clock when Danny Lewthwaite fired into the net, and the same player tucked away another chance on 52 to round off the scoring.

Glan Conwy had a free weekend but were ousted from the summit by Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs, who sealed a dramatic 5-4 win at basement dwellers Amlwch Town.

The result leaves Howard Vaughan’s men three points behind their promotion rivals, although they do have two games in hand.
