A LAST-minute header from defender Dave Hayes gave Prestatyn Town a narrow 2-1 home win over ten-man Denbigh Town.

The Seasiders’ got back to winning ways after a disappointing defeat at Ruthin Town last weekend in dramatic fashion at the Motion Finance Stadium, and Neil Gibson’s side are still in contention for a top six finish ahead of their long trip to Penrhyncoch on Saturday (2.30pm).

Gibson, said: “The three points is a positive to take out of the game and after losing last week it was imperative we did that.

“We worked hard on a game plan throughout the week but Denbigh changed their formation so we had to be bright on our feet. The lads did really well first half and we were good value for the lead.

“The game changed on the sending off as it seemed to galvanise them and we weren’t good enough in securing the overload, so there are areas to work on.

“What I have got here is a really good group of lads who are really good at finding the character and resilience to come back. We haven’t accepted the equaliser and got back ahead and to get a last-minute winner in front of the home fans is a great feeling.

“We had a few lads struggling this week with injury and it may have been down to that. We will draw a line under it now, take out the positives and we will be working hard this week in the hope of building some more momentum.”

The home side started the game brightly and went ahead on 26 minutes when Jack Higgins netted his first goal since returning to the club after good work from Hayes and Ian Griffiths in the build-up, and things looked even more promising shortly after the break when Kristian Pierce was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

This seemed to spring the visitors into life, and they looked to have secured a point on 84 minutes when the impressive Pat Hinchcliffe unleashed a sensational free-kick past Ryan Roberts.

There was still time for further drama, with Hayes popping up with a close range header with just seconds to play to spark delirious scenes with the Town faithful.
