GLAN Conwy enjoyed a fantastic weekend in their Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two title quest as they secured a 3-0 win over Penmaenmawr Phoenix.

Howard Vaughan’s men were in ruthless mood to claim another three points against a strong Phoenix side, and there was further good news as title rivals Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs suffered a shock 1-0 reverse at the hands of Gaerwen.

This sent Glan to the top of the standings on goal difference during a critical stage of the season, and they also have a game in hand on their title rivals and would go three clear with a victory.

The home side went ahead on 15 minutes when a Jamie Jones free-kick was expertly steered into the net by prolific forward Merrick Knight after a prolonged spell of pressure.

After the break saw Knight despatch his second of the afternoon in clinical fashion on 48 minutes, and the championship contender secured another vital triumph late on when Conor Davies produced a fine finish to round off the scoring.

Mochdre Sports’ struggles continued as they were beaten 3-1 at Pentraeth.

Goals from Marcus Holland, Jack Diamond and Owain Williams gave the hosts’ a comfortable advantage in the opening half hour of the clash, and despite a consolation from Cai Davies after the interval it was not enough for the second-from-bottom side to salvage something from the game.
