VETERAN striker Leon Gierke was the star of the show as Llansannan extended their advantage at the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division summit with a 7-3 win at Old Colwyn.

Gari Evans and Tom Lewis’ side took full advantage of teams around them enjoying an off day during a bumper goal fest on their travels, and they took a commanding lead early on when Liam Jones and Ifan Jones both hit the target within the opening 19 minutes.

Things got even better for the visitors soon after when Gierke despatched his first of the contest on 34 minutes, but Colwyn responded well after the break and got themselves back into the tie thanks to a quick-fire brace from Ryan Watson on 55 and 57 minutes.

Gierke ensured that the visitors remained in control when he slotted from the penalty spot on the hour mark, and the former Burnley trainee fired in two more throughout the remainder of the contest to take his tally for the afternoon to four.

The home side kept plugging away and notched a consolation late on through Joel Massam, but it was not enough to affect the overall outcome.

There was further good news for the long-time leaders as Abergele produced a fine effort to secure a 1-0 victory at Llandudno Athletic.

A tight contest was settled on 84 minutes when Kieron Hilditch’s superb strike, and Gele held firm in the closing stages for three points.

Another promotion chasing side also dropped points as Llanfairfechan Town were held 1-1 at Machno United.

Rhidian Williams gave the home side a shock early lead on 15 minutes, before a Ryan Dodd effort with 35 gone ensured both sides had something to show for their efforts.

Bro Cernyw’s Llion Morris hit a two-goal salvo to guide his side to a 3-1 success over Cerrigydrudion to move them into second spot in the standings.
