RHYL pulled off a major JD Welsh Cup giant-killing with a superb 2-1 win at top flight side Newtown.

The Lilywhites came from behind to reach the fourth round in impressive fashion and extend their sensational winning run to eight games, something director of football Eddie Maurice-Jones will be looking to extend this Friday when he returns to former club Denbigh Town in the Huws Gray Alliance (7.45pm).

The visitors made a strong start to the game and almost went ahead early on when Aaron Hassall went on a mazy run and beat several players before firing wide, with an audacious chip from Kristian Pierce dropping narrowly over with Robins’ stopper Dave Jones beaten.

Pierce was looking lively in the opening exchanges and flashed a shot wide after some more good possession on eight minutes, and they were made to pay for not taking advantage of their early dominance when Neil Mitchell turned in a superb delivery from Joe Kenton with 20 on the clock.

Things almost got worse for the away side just before the break when an Ethan Jones volley flew over, but the Lilies came out in the second period with a renewed sense of purpose and they drew level on the hour mark when midfielder Gareth Partridge prodded home from close range after some superb individual work from James Murphy.

They built on this momentum further shortly after when the outstanding Hassall produced a fine effort that beat Jones to give them the lead for the first time in the tie.

Visiting custodian Rory Crowther was at his brilliant best to deny Ethan Jones with a superb save from a one-on-one situation on 72 minutes, and the away side almost wrapped things up in the closing stages when a Murphy strike was diverted away from danger.

The Rhyl back three of Ben Nash, Reece Fairhurst and skipper Max Peate were in commanding form to ensure their side saw out the remainder of the game in comfortable fashion to reach the last 16 with a famous victory.
