RHYL director of football Eddie Maurice-Jones praised his side’s fighting spirit following their derby triumph over Bangor City.

The Lilywhites are in the midst of a sensational run of form that has eclipsed their early Huws Gray Alliance struggles, and Maurice-Jones has urged his side to “not get ahead of themselves” as they gear up for a pivotal JD Welsh Cup third round clash at Newtown next Saturday.

He said: “It is a massive result and you could see just how much it means to the players and everyone associated with the club.

“I thought we deserved it. We didn’t give in even when they scored which is a reflection of where our season is headed as earlier on perhaps some heads would have gone down The togetherness is growing which is a good thing going forward.

“Bangor were always going to come out strongly in the second half and they had a lot of the ball in the first 20 minutes, but it allowed us to play into the spaces we thought they were vulnerable, and we showed the right determination to get the win which was well-earned.

“The main thing now is to stay grounded and not get ahead of ourselves. It has been a fast journey in a way after the poor start and there are always going to be downs but it is how you recover from them. We have a big, important game next weekend which is going to be a big challenge and it is important the lads switch off now before getting themselves ready.”

Lilies’ skipper Max Peate, who netted the winner to decide the contest, added: “We knew how big it was coming in and what it means to the club and fans, and I thought we were brilliant for the full 90 minutes.

“The pressure built on us towards the end but we had something to hold on to and everyone’s work ethic was terrific. Newtown is another huge game but we can go there positive and confident.”
