PRESTATYN Town were given a scare before eventually advancing to the JD Welsh Cup second round with a 6-3 home win over Berriew.

The Seasiders booked their place in the hat with a clinical display against a spirited away side, who mounted a second half fightback and missed a crucial penalty to go ahead which proved to be the turning point.

Neil Gibson’s side now turn their immediate attention to improving their Huws Gray Alliance form on November 23 when they make the trip to in-form Bangor City.

Gibson, said: “I have got to give credit to Berriew for the way they played. They wanted the upset and you can see why they have scored so many goals this season.

“Their front three were always a threat but I thought we deserved to be in front at the break. The lads deserve great credit for the character they showed to get back into it, although we need to manage the game better.

“You won’t build a successful team if you don’t have these characteristics about them and we have a lot of winners within the group.

“It looked like everything was going against us and the penalty was the turning point but I thought we deserved it in the end.”

The visitors took a shock lead on 14 minutes through a fine effort on the turn from Joe Haycock, before a quick-fire brace from skipper Alex Jones turned the game in favour of the hosts.

Things got even better just before the break when Oli Buckley’s superb strike doubled their advantage on 31 minutes, but the visitors came out flying after the break and got themselves back into the tie through Haycock and Richard Davies.

The crucial moment arrived on 73 minutes when the away side were awarded a penalty, but they failed to convert and were made to pay when Jones sealed his hat-trick with a spot-kick of his own.

Gibson’s side put the exclamation point on proceedings late on when Warren Adam and Dan Robert both hit the target in the closing stages.
