RHYL director of football Eddie Maurice-Jones is calling on his side to “give one back” to Conwy Borough ahead of their JD Welsh Cup first round clash on Saturday.

The Lilywhites have enjoyed a rich history of the competition and get their cup campaign underway at Y Morfa against their Huws Gray Alliance rivals, who have enjoyed a phenomenal amount of success under Gareth Thomas and have begun the season in sterling form.

The two sides have already met this season in the league, with the Tangerines emerging victorious during what was a disappointing performance from the Lilies, something Maurice-Jones is looking to avoid this time around.

He said: “It gives us a chance to give one back to Conwy as I felt we didn’t perform that evening and the lads know that.

“There were a few choice words said after that game and I want us to also prove that last week wasn’t a one off and we are capable of performing like that week in, week out.

“The atmosphere in the group has changed in the last three or four weeks and we have seen glimpses of what we are capable of although the result haven’t been going our way. I always knew that it was going to be a matter of time and it all fell into place against Holywell Town and this cup tie is another chance for the lads to prove to me and the management team that they belong in the shirt as it is going to be difficult.

“It’s a massive cup that is important for Rhyl, and also for myself and the boys to see how far we can actually go. We want to play on a weekly basis and keep improving and setting the bar, and it is good for the fans to get a good cup run and you might draw lucky and get a good opponent and be on TV.

“We are looking forward to the game and we owe Conwy a performance.”
