PRESTATYN were denied victory by the elements as their clash at Liverpool was abandoned.

The Liverpool and District Cricket League Division One side looked in good shape before the heavens opened to ensure both sides had something to show for their efforts, and the stalemate leaves Daniel Williams’ side in sixth spot as they prepare to welcome Birkenhead Park to Beach Close on Saturday.

Sam Holliday made a good start for the home side with the prized wicket of all-rounder Peter Cassidy for 19, and he also despatched Sheil Sethi for a duck soon after in what were testing conditions for the batsmen.

Disappointing spells at the crease from Williams (7), Danny Thomas (6) David Harris (1) and Gareth Leonard (14) saw concerns grow, but impressive knocks from Ryan Westwell and wicketkeeper Robbie Rimmington restored respectability to the innings during a critical stage.

Westwell was a resolute presence on his way to 39, with Rimmington making 44 before he was ousted by Peter Kelly (4-41) as they set a target of 157 from 42 overs in the middle.

The hosts made a strong start thanks to the opening pair of Henry Charlton and Holliday, who both fell victim to Kieron New on 25 and 35, and there was further cause for optimism when Cassidy quickly dismissed the middle order trio of Luke Procter (3), Chris Tonge (11) and Rory Nelson (2) on his way to figures of 3-48 from a 17-over spell.

With momentum on their side, play was halted and subsequently abandoned following a significant downpour after 35 overs and with the hosts on 86-5.

Prestatyn’s second unit were unable to continue their positive recent form as they fell to a 54-run home defeat to Sutton (St Helens).

Skipper Ashley Jones hit an unbeaten 52 during their run chase, but he ran out of partners at the other end of the crease to fall short.
