PRESTATYN Town legend Dave Hayes has made a sensational U-turn and returned to the club for the upcoming season.

The trophy-laden centre half initially retired from football following their relegation to the Huws Gray Alliance, but the joint-management team of Leon Field and Ryan Turner have convinced the defender to go back on his initial decision and re-join the squad.

Hayes, said: “The club asked me to come in and help stabilise things, and after thinking it through - I’m happy to be back and helping in any way I can.

“I’ve watched the new lads play - they’re a young side with a lot of hunger, and there’s so much quality in there. I think that little bit of experience around them will help, but Leon and Ryan have been doing a fantastic job.”

The defender also paid tribute to the loyal Town fanbase, who were a “huge factor” in his decision to return to the set-up ahead of their return to the second tier this Saturday when they host Airbus Broughton (2.30pm).

“A big reason for me coming back is definitely the fans. Home and away, there’s no other fans like them,” added Hayes.

“I’ve had some great times with this club, and they’ve always been there no matter what. We always had a strong core that grew up together, and I can see that happening again with the talented youngsters that are coming through. I’m excited to get into training now and start the season strongly.”

Field could not hide his delight after securing the services of Hayes, with the player turning down an offer from JD Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town to make a triumphant return to the Motion Finance Stadium.

He said: “Dave Hayes is a born leader. He plays with so much passion, and yet he’s such a calming influence to those around him. He’s taken this great club through its best times, and he’s come back on board now to help recreate that going forward.”
