CPD Y Rhyl 1879 recorded a 10th successive league victory after a late 2-1 win at Nantlle Vale on Saturday (April 1).

The win keeps Rhyl on course for a second consecutive promotion, and for the Ardal North West League title, with just three games to go.

After a cagey, goalless first half, the Lilywhites came out after the break with the bit between their teeth.

It took just two minutes for them to find the back of the net through the industrious and influential Alex Jones.

Following a determined run at the Nantlle Vale back line, he delivered a cute, composed finish to break the deadlock on 47 minutes.

But the Lilywhites’ lead lasted just nine minutes, with the hosts bundling an equaliser over the line following a defensive mix-up.

The hosts’ Ashley Fon Owen took the plaudits from the Nantlle Vale supporters in making it 1-1.

With little else to note from the second half, the game looked like both teams were going to take a point each.

But two minutes into stoppage time, Rhyl’s stand-in captain, James Jones, was fouled in the penalty area, and referee Andrew Dukes pointed straight to the spot.

Up stepped experienced forward Jonny Taylor, who came as on a late substitute, and made no mistake from the penalty spot, despite home goalkeeper Owain Roberts getting a hand to the ball.

There were seven minutes of stoppage time for the Lilywhites to contend with, but the final whistle was eventually blown, leading to jubilant celebrations from manager Gareth Thomas and his side in front of their away following.

Next up, the Lilywhites travel to Nantporth on Saturday (April 8), with Bangor 1876 the opponents in this all-ticket affair (kick-off 12.30pm).
