THE Rhyl and District Sunday Football League is to fold at the end of the current 2022-23 season, which also be curtailed early.

With just seven teams now competing in the league, it was decided at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on March 23 that it would not return next season.

Its seven remaining clubs are Conwy Comrades, FC Mally, Prestatyn Wanderers, Rhyl Celtics, Rhyl Rangers, Royal Oak and Y Clwb.

The 22-23 season will finish early with two final games, one between FC Mally and Y Clwb, and the other contested by Conwy Comrades and Royal Oak.

The two winners will then meet in a “winner-takes-all” match on April 23 at Llandudno Junction’s Arriva Ground.

It is under the jurisdiction of the North Wales Coast Football Association (NWCFA).

Bryan Roberts, chairman of the NWCFA, said: “It was with great regret that at an EGM of the Rhyl and District Football League, the remaining member clubs agreed that, on conclusion of the 22-23 season, the league would be folding.

“There are several reasons for this decision, in as much as the lack of new clubs, lack of referees and of course, the proposed ‘one player, one club’ rule, which meant that Saturday players could not sign for Sunday league teams.

“Rhyl Sunday League is the last of the Sunday leagues in North Wales, with the demise of the Deeside Sunday League and the Anglesey Sunday League over the past years.

“The NWCFA are saddened that the league will not be functional next season and thank those committee members for all their hard work in attempting to keep Sunday football alive.”

The league dropped to seven teams in October after Millbank folded with immediate effect.

Organisers had previously said that eight teams was the minimum number to make the league workable.
