CPD Y Rhyl 1879 returned on Saturday (October 1) in style with a 6-0 thrashing of CPD Cefni at Belle Vue in the FAW Amateur Trophy.

Early pressure from the Lilywhites would finally pay on 23 minutes. A great team move, started by Dan Sim, resulted in the ball falling to Sion Williams on the edge of the box, who saw the opportunity to fire the ball low, to the left of the unsighted Cefni goalkeeper.

On 32 minutes, Cefni would be reduced to 10 men, Luke Miles receiving his second yellow card following the use of his elbow in a challenge with Sim.

Soon after, Jack Higgins fired an effort past keeper Cian Wyn Griffiths-Jones following a great move by Kieran Ellis.

And Macauley Taylor then made it 3-0 right on the stroke of half-time, stabbing the ball home after a goal-line scramble from close range following Alex Jones’ corner.

It was not until 65 minutes that Rhyl to get their fourth, which came after a wonderful run down the right by Taylor, outrunning two Cefni defenders and delivering a superb pass into Ellis.

He received the ball with his back to goal, and with Griffiths-Jones rushing towards him, he dummied to his left, leaving the keeper stranded, and calmly slotted it home.

Substitute Leon Atkins would get the fifth on 79 minutes, after a well-worked move saw Taylor find him free in the box, who took a touch and fired home.

Chris Bennett got on the scoresheet two minutes later, following another good move by Taylor again which saw Bennett beat the Cefni defender to the ball, and he was able to lift the ball over the outstretched keeper into the goal.

Rhyl manager, Gareth Thomas, said: “A 6-0 win with six different scorers, and we managed to get minutes into all of the players.

“A special mention to the lads coming back: Luke (Wilmott) in goal hasn’t played since the first game, Sim back after injury, Sion (Williams) was back, and Higgo (Jack Higgins) got a start, which was his first start after injury.

“All in all, pleasing to get minutes into the lads, some back from long-term injuries, which has boosted the squad.

“We had a solid 16-man squad with two or three left out; they’re all coming back at the right time”.

Next up for the Lilywhites is second-tier Ruthin Town, who visit Belle Vue on Saturday (October 8) in the FAW Welsh Cup (2.30pm kick-off).
