CPD Y Rhyl completed an unbeaten league season as they trounced 5-0 Glan Conwy away from home in the final match of the NWCFA East League Premier Division campaign on Thursday (May 19).

The high-flying and newly crowned league champions were one game away from having the honour alongside their fellow women’s team in being titled “The Invincibles”.

And the Lilywhites wasted no time at all in looking to win another game when lively wing-back Chris Bennett took the ball superbly down the right wing, delivering a tantalising cross along the six-yard line for Macauley Taylor to bravely prod it home for the first goal on five minutes.

On 21 minutes, after dominating the ball, it was Tom Cain who scored the second with a textbook left-footed finish nestling into the top corner; the goal which he fully deserved for his battling performance.

Then only three minutes later, Bennett was starting to match his early season form with a goal following his return from his long injury lay-off – that is now two in two for the wing-back.

Then just before half-time, it was Casey Faulkner, the Lilywhites’ left-wing back, who also got on the score sheet with a tidy finish making it four with no reply from the home side as the half ended 4-0, the unbeaten league season now looked inevitable.

After the break, the large crowd saw Leon Atkins continue his fine scoring form with his first of the game and Rhyl’s fifth and final goal.

The game ended 5-0 with a fantastic away following clapping both teams of the pitch; the unbeaten season complete.

After the game, a delighted manager Gareth Thomas said, “It was really good tonight as a few players missed out and coming from work for a 6.30pm kick off, the lads were at it from the word go.

“Credit to them as that’s 24 wins out of 26 and that is some achievement at any level.

“The women have also gone unbeaten, and it’s been a superb season for the rebuilt club.”

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 final game of their historic first season is on Tuesday, May 31 at Nantlle Vale in the Intermediate Challenge Cup Final, kick-off time and opponent to be determined.
