EAST Parade Bowling Club, more than 100 years old and one of the oldest bowling clubs in Wales, broke new ground on Bank Holiday Monday (April 18).

The seaside club played its inaugural match in the challenging Colwyn/Llandudno League and came away with a victory at Craig-y-Don on a tricky green, albeit by the skin of its teeth, after an enthralling and nail-biting encounter.

Les Keates, Alvin Ward, Ged Ironmonger, Ricky Prosser and Tom Williams were East Parade’s five winners, with the redoubtable Williams gaining a crucial victory, coming from 7-18 down to win 21-20.

This left Peter Hobbis needing nine shots from the final game to clinch the aggregate for the Rhyl team.

Things looked bleak for the Seasiders, with the usually reliable Hobbis 19-6 down after being all square 6-6 against his opponent.

But a remarkable trio of deliveries lifted him to 9-21, and with it an winning aggregate score for East Parade by just one point.

Final score: Craig-y-Don 5 (161) East Parade 7 (162)
