SINCE turning 65 last month, Prestatyn Running Club’s Gordon Jones has been in sparkling form.

Three weeks after setting a new age-group record in the North Wales 5-mile championships, he swapped the red vest of Prestatyn for that of Wales in the Mid-Cheshire 5k, which incorporated a Masters’ international contest.

The standard of competition was, as usual,  phenomenal, which is reflected in the fact that Gordon finished in 482nd place overall despite clocking 18.12.

But not only did he win his class in the international, beating all six English runners, but also in the open race.

“It places me fourth in the UK rankings for the distance, which is probably more prestigious than my third position for 5 miles as there are more 5k races,” said Gordon.

During the race, he eased past fellow Prestatyn member Steve Stocker, who finished 494th in 18.36, just outside his PB.

Also in great form at the moment is club captain Dave Ellis, who set a new pb of 18.19 in the Nova parkrun, which attracted more than 170 participants.
