THE Welsh 1,000s is rightly regarded as one of the toughest challenges in the Welsh mountain-running calendar, but Prestatyn Running Club’s Lee Bailey made a superb debut in the event.

The 32km race involves 2,800 metres of climbs between Aber on the coast and Snowdon, and navigation skills are also required.

It attracts many of the country’s leading mountain runners, and Lee did brilliantly to finish 21st overall in five hours and 11 minutes.

A total of three other club members also took to the hills, travelling to the Thornton in Craven fell race, near Skipton, where conditions were perfect for the 15k race.

Martin Cortvriend had the unusual experience of coming second in his M70 class, finishing 51st overall in 1-33.03.

Ann-Claire Jones was 66th in 1-42.17 and Helen Alefounder 73rd in 1-54.44.

Conditions were also good for the weekend’s parkruns, but fewer than usual club members were in action.

Results: Nova: 12 Martin Cortvriend 21.48, 13 Steve Weedman 21.52, 36 Andrew Scott 26.19, 57 Paul Brandrick 29.12 (pb), 60 Debbie Weedman 29.31, 83 Roger Harrison-Jones.

Greenfield Valley: 8 Darren Thompson 22.35, 11 Luke Bodman 22.49, 40 Debbie Jones 28.56, 49 Hadyn Johnson 30.30, 55 Julie Evans 35.04.

Conwy: 138 Bill Scriven 29.06.

It was a different story on Sunday (June 5) for the Llyn Brenig trail race, with puddles everywhere along the 9.5-mile course.

Again, it was the club’s supervets who shone; Gordon Jones coming sixth overall and first in the 60-69 class in an excellent 60.16.

Arwel Jones was second in the same age group in 79.21, and Mandy Cartwright and Sophie Johnson, who ran together and finished in 89.11.

Meanwhile, the club’s 40th anniversary social on July 9 is now a sell-out, with all 120 tickets having been snapped up.
