A TRIO of Prestatyn Running Club’s ladies have already proved their pedigree on the hills this year, but on Saturday (May 7), they faced their toughest challenge yet.

Ann-Claire Jones, Helen Alefounder and Julia Evans joined a large field in the Moel Eilio race from Llanberis, a “real” fell-race involving 3,000 feet of ascent and including four summits.

Ann-Claire and Helen finished together in 1-44, with Julia four minutes behind them.

James Rogers and Cara Jones faced a different kind of hilly challenge in the Rhostryfan 10k near Caernarfon, which is perhaps the most testing 10k road race in North Wales.

James crossed the line in 27th place, clocking 48.18, while Cara was 44th in 57.59.

Although others had entered, only two club members turned out in Sunday’s Llangollen Trail 10k, and both came in the top three in their age-groups.

Des Davies was 59th overall in 52.04, taking third place in the M60-70 class, while in the equivalent ladies’ class Julie Evans came second.

Her time of 73.41 was more than six minutes better than her previous best for the course.

There was also a smaller representation than usual in the parkruns in the region.

Results: Nova: 9 Steve Weedman 21.38, 24 Martin Gill 25.31, 48 Linda Friar 30.35.

Conwy: 13 Martin Cortvriend 21.34 (M70 course record), 47 Andrew Scott 24.42.

Erddig: 45 Sophie Johnson 26.52, 61 Mandy Cartwright 27.57.

This Wednesday (May 11), the final Borders Road-Running League fixture is being held in Birkenhead Park, with three club members expected to pick up age-group awards.

The race, across a shorter than usual three-lap course, starts at 7.30pm.

On May 18, the club’s social evening takes place in Rhewl, near Ruthin, with an off-road run followed by a meal.

Anyone who hasn’t yet told Gareth Hughes if he or she intends to run is asked to do so by this Wednesday at the latest.
