TWO life-size wooden sculptures have returned to their rightful place in Prestatyn after two years of repair work.

Held on Thursday, 29 October, a ceremony welcomed the silhouettes back to Hillside Gardens near Gwaenysgor following their vandalization in 2024.

Originally commissioned by the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) the statues were created by Rossett-based chainsaw sculptor Simon O’Rourke.

Installed back in 2017, the two figures that look out to the sea, portray a modern-day walker representing the Offa’s Dyke National Trail and a walker from the 1920’s, symbolising the time that the shelter was built.

However, the figures were taken from their place in August 2024 after vandals had knocked them off their platform and removed their hands.

Following careful restoration by Mr O’Rourke, the sculptures have returned to Prestatyn.

He said: “When I was first commissioned to make the two sculptures, I was excited to create something that would leave a lasting legacy in a beautiful location.

"Over the years, many people have taken photos of and enjoyed the sculptures, and they've become part of the community.

"It was a real shame to hear of them being vandalised, but it was lovely to hear so many people had worked together to allow me the opportunity to restore them."

Councillor Will Price, Lead Member for Planning, Countryside and Safer Communities said: “It is fantastic to see that these sculptures will once again sit proudly at Hillside Gardens following the disappointment of their vandalism a few years back.

"I would like to thank the council’s countryside services, Simon O’Rourke, Prestatyn Town Council and the local members, for their perseverance and efforts in returning these figures, which mean so much to the community back to where they belong."
