A NEW monthly market could be held in Prestatyn’s town centre.

Emily Goodwin, of Prestatyn Town Council, has written a proposal for a market in the town centre precinct, which will be discussed at a town council meeting tonight (October 14).

Prestatyn formerly had a market on Gas Works Lane, which was open to the public four times a week, but this ended in 2021 prior to the opening of a Home Bargains store on the land.

Ms Goodwin said she hopes the proposed new market would “provide an opportunity to reintroduce some of that community and trading atmosphere on a smaller, manageable scale”.

An initial market event in the precinct has been scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 10am to 2pm.

She added: “The aim is to create a welcoming and vibrant monthly event that encourages residents and visitors to spend time in the town centre, supports local businesses and independent traders, and adds variety to the town centre offer.”

It is proposed that the market operates on one Saturday a month, initially on a four-event trial basis.

At first, the market would consist of approximately six to eight stalls.

Ms Goodwin said: “The precinct provides a central and accessible location with the potential to create a visible and attractive market environment without requiring a large-scale market operation.

“The layout would be designed to ensure that pedestrian access, accessibility and existing businesses are not unnecessarily obstructed.

“Potential traders could include local food and drink producers, cakes and bakery products, arts and crafts, handmade goods, local produce, gifts, plants and flowers, seasonal products, independent businesses, community organisations, and other appropriate small businesses.

“Where possible, the market should complement, rather than directly compete with, existing Prestatyn town centre businesses.

“A varied selection of stalls would be encouraged, so that the market offers something different from month to month.”

A stall fee of between £40 and £60 per market is proposed, while members of the Prestatyn Business Forum would be offered a stall free of charge.

A town council member of staff would work approximately from 9am until 3pm on the day of the market.
