Abergele Rugby Club’s clubhouse is set for a major upgrade after councillors unanimously backed plans for new changing rooms and facilities.

The proposal to extend the existing clubhouse at Pentre Mawr Park on Dundonald Avenue was supported by Conwy County Council’s planning committee today (Wednesday) at its meeting at the authority’s Coed Pella HQ in Colwyn Bay.

The plans will provide two new changing rooms, shower facilities, a second referee room, and communal toilets.

The application, submitted by Abergele Rugby Club Ltd, was brought before the committee because the development is on council-owned land.

Cllr Nia Owen said: “I am very supportive of this application. We are seeing a big growth in the number of sports clubs in the county at the moment, and we should be welcoming that.

“It is so important that we should be supporting these sports clubs in order to attract more participants because we all know the benefits of that.”

Cllr Goronwy Edwards added that the provision of toilets was a positive move.

Cllr David Carr added: “I support this application. We want more sports facilities, particularly for young people in the county.”

The proposed extension is set to measure 27.3 metres by 6.8 metres and replace an existing separate single-storey storage building at the rear of the clubhouse.

The plans also include store areas and the relocation of the existing bar area, with the bar and kitchen separated to improve the layout and facilities at the clubhouse.

The extension will feature two pitched-roof gables at either end of the building, with an open gated storage area between them.

External materials include blue engineering brick or grey cladding and timber-clad external walls, with concrete roof tiles to match the existing pavilion building.

Metal or timber gates are proposed to enclose the open store area, while four bird boxes will be installed at the gable of the building.

Councillors unanimously supported the application
