KFC has been urged to clean its waste area by its premises on Rhyl’s High Street after a woman labelled it “absolutely disgusting”.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said she has to walk through the alleyway where KFC’s bins are kept to get to work at the White Rose Shopping Centre.

She raised issues including rat droppings in greasy water, and chicken bones left on the floor, but said efforts to have the matter resolved have had little success.

Denbighshire County Council’s environmental health department has also been contacted, she said.

The woman said: “The bin area of KFC in Rhyl is absolutely disgusting and no one seems to care.

“It’s been a constant battle with KFC to get it cleaned. It’s been raised to them before; it’s been cleaned a few times, but then it goes back to how it is.

“You quite often see chicken bones on the floor, but that’s the worst I’ve seen it for a long time.  There are rats in the alleyway.

“I’ve reported it twice to environmental health now, but nothing’s happened.”

The woman added that an adjacent waste storage area, used by those living in flats above KFC, is “absolutely overflowing with rubbish”.

She said she hoped that by highlighting the matter, KFC would be obliged to clean the area regularly.

“I love Rhyl, I’ve worked in Rhyl all my life, and hate that I’m contributing to the negativity about the town, but this is just too much,” she added.

“I’ve had to get pest control in because of KFC, and they just continue to leave the bin area in this condition

“This has been a problem for a couple of years now. I used to love KFC but I can’t eat there anymore - it’s a nightmare.

“I just want them to clean it up. It’s not nice having to walk by that every night.”

In response, KFC said it works closely with a professional pest-control specialist, which regularly visits the site, with all of its recommendations having been actioned.

Last week, a suspected leaking pipe from a neighbouring premises was identified, which was causing water to collect in the shared yard, KFC added.

The restaurant received a perfect score of five following its last food hygiene inspection on June 16.

A KFC spokesperson said: “We care about being a good neighbour in our local community, and keeping the areas surrounding our restaurants clean and well maintained is an important part of that.

"The alleyway where our bins are stored is shared with several neighbouring businesses.

"Our team regularly checks and cleans the area, and we have recently increased the frequency of our waste collections and taken additional measures to prevent pests.

"We’ll continue to monitor the area closely and work with our neighbours to keep it clean and tidy.”

A Denbighshire County Council spokesperson said: "The council can confirm that a complaint has been received.

"This will be allocated to an officer to investigate and decide on the most appropriate course of action taking into account of our priorities within our complaint procedures.

"An acknowledgement has been sent to the complainant regarding this specific complaint.

"It is important to note that it is the food business operator’s premises’ responsibility to keep their waste receptacles, and the area around them in an orderly fashion."
