POUNDBAKERY has closed its store in Rhyl, telling staff that the shop had become “unprofitable”.
Based on the town’s High Street, its last day of business was Saturday, September 5.
Employees received a redundancy letter from S&PB Retail Ltd, the parent company of Poundbakery, last week.
Extracts from this letter, shown to the Journal, read: “Despite all recent efforts to remain trading across all shops, the decline in cashflow has meant that we have no alternative but to close the unprofitable shops.
“Following the confirmation received from your area sales manager, we write with regret to confirm that the (Poundbakery in) Rhyl will close with effect from September 5 (last day of trade), and as a result, you are redundant.
“Your area sales manager discussed that due to timescales and a lack of availability of alternatives, it was not possible to explore any redeployment options and confirmed that as a result, regrettably your position is redundant.
“You will be paid by the company for all hours worked up to shop closure.”
Poundbakery opened on Rhyl’s High Street in February 2021, having previously been based in the town’s White Rose Shopping Centre.
It was located on High Street next door to another bakery; Greggs.
